CaixaBank offsets 100% of its carbon footprint

CaixaBank calculates its carbon footprint annually and since 2013 offsets part of its corporate emissions through Lavola’s Clean CO2  service. The calculation and offset are part of the entity’s Carbon Neutral Project which also includes an emissions reduction and the purchase of renewable energy.

This year, CaixaBank has taken a step forward in its commitment to the environment and offsets CO2 emissions derived from all its activity, both in the central services and the branch network. This way, it expands the offset to indirect GHG emissions that are consequence of the organization, but are not under its control (such as purchased goods and services, capital goods, waste generated in operations or corporate travel and employee commuting).

CaixaBank’s 100% GHG emissions offset of 2017 was made through the purchase of 34,753 carbon credits from a wind energy production project in India available at the Clean CO2 portfolio and through a project to reduce its own emissions registered in the “Registry of carbon foot

CaixaBank’s 100% GHG emissions offset of 2017 was made through the purchase of 34,753 carbon credits from a wind energy production project in India available at the Clean CO2 portfolio and through a project to reduce its own emissions registered in the “Registry of carbon footprint, compensation and absorption projects” promoted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO).

CaixaBank’s own project consists in the restoration of burnt land during the July 2016 forest fire, by planting 4,500 trees of native species. The action is carried out in a plot of 11.1 hectares and an absorption of 812 tons of CO2 is foreseen during the 40 years of permanence on the plantation.
Regarding the project of the Clean CO2 portfolio, it is called “Grid Connected Wind Energy Project“. This project is located in the state of Tamil Nadu and consists on the installation of 30 1.65 MW wind energy generators that will produce a total of 49.5 MW, allowing power supply to the local network of the southern region of India. The project involves the reduction of 108,219 tons of CO2eq per year associated with the substitution of fossil fuel-based electricity generation, while allowing a sustainable economy and an environmental development. It is a certified project under the VER (Verified Emissions Reduction) standard.

Thanks to this project, the damage caused by coal mining is reduced, contributing to the economical and social development of the region. This is possible through the creation of employment opportunities, the increase in value of the land where the project is located, electric supply service and, in addition, air quality is improved due to the reduction of sulfur dioxide emissions.

With this action, CaixaBank has obtained the Clean CO2 Certified Certificate and Seal as proof of the neutrality of its 2017 emissions.
